Let me tell you something, being good looking, or having a tower like height, or the urge of traveling isn’t enough reasons to take Tourism Major courses. If they told you that, “you are really pretty/handsome, you should take tourism”, “you have a good height you are perfect to be a flight attendant, you should take tourism”, or you told yourself “i really want to travel the world, i’m gonna take tourism”. Apparently things doesn’t go that way, it takes more than just a pretty face, a good height or your want to travel. Tourism Courses are more than that.
I was on 6th grade when i have decided i truly wanted to take tourism, because i want to be a crew in a cruise ship and yes, i wanted to travel the world. After I graduated highschool my urge to take tourism still didn’t fade, so i look for a college then enrolled myself in Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management. On the first day of my college years, aside from introducing yourself we are often asked “why did you choose this course?” some said, “because i wanted to travel the world” and others said “because i wanted to be a flight attendant” and at least of them said they didn’t have any choice or their parents just forced them to take this course. As i remember clearly my answer goes like this, “because it is my dream…” i guess my reasons are the same as theirs but it gotten deeper and it wasn’t just something i wanted, it is something i’m planning to do.
Some say that this course is easy, it is for the ones who not use their brains all the time and whose beauty is the only thing they had. But just like the accounting student who said that very line, we are studying accounting too and probably knows how much you are troubled. Just like the finance student who said that very line, we are studying finance too and probably knows how much you are troubled. Just like the psychology student who said that very line, we are studying general psychology and logic too and probably knows how much you are troubled. Just like the business student who said that very line, we are studying management and marketing too and probably knows how much you are troubled. And just like the IT or computer student who said that very line, we are studying about the global distribution system with specific codes the tourism industry use too and probably knows how much you are troubled. We are also studying different languages, we are memorizing every country on the map alongside with the understanding of their culture, and we are studying every fact within a certain destination to share it with tourists on our future jobs. We are taught to give the highest quality of our service and to always be presentable. So that basically shows that we have brains too.
My point here is, like the ones who take engineering/architectural courses who dream on building probably tallest building they will ever build, just like the ones who take law courses with their dream of helping the ones who are being deviated from justice, just like the ones who take medical courses who dream of saving people’s lives, and just like the ones who are going on a training at the military or police with their dream of protecting the country and its people. Like all of them, we also have dreams to fly and take over the world.
Just like all of the courses in the world this course takes talent, hard work, persistence and most of all knowledge and not just beauty. Tourism is more than what you think it is. I didn’t wrote this to prove all of you wrong, but to make all of you understand. For you to understand that we all go to school to achieve that bachelor’s degree, and trust me we all want the same thing but for different reasons and we are doing it on different ways we know we can.
